Album review : 'Every time' by Judee
Posted by mhussey in news category TOTO News on 25/01/2012 at 16:46:02
Having listened to this album I've got mixed feelings about it. All aspects were good including the songwriting, the production, the vocals and the musicianship plus a fabulous Album cover. That said, no aspect was outstanding and big improvements could have be made before release. 'Every time' is a light album that you may classify as easy listening with plenty of rhythm. Still, it feels like a step back in time with what appear to sound like sequenced drums and precision that lacked any power, emotion and creativity. Although the production was clear it did seem quite amateur in some respects. Of all the instruments a lot of the guitar playing was quite tasteful.  The songs themselves clearly have influences from around the globe and it does make an interesting list... (click to read more)
Insanely talented and overlooked...but for how long
Posted by mhussey in news category TOTO News on 15/01/2012 at 14:40:01
Tom Billington has just completed his new album 'As luck would have it'. The man who once fronted the indie band Mohair is set to make waves with this folk and lyric driven album. Within each track you can hear the carefully crafted and recorded lyrics delivered from Toms emotion driven vocal.  Speaking with Tom he told us that the basic tracks had been laid down in just a few days after which time he travelled the lengths of the country to seek out contributions from other trusted and talented musicians including 'The Staves'. His dedication to the music has paid off with what, if given the chance could turn out to be a classic album.

Regardless of if you are a Dylan fan or a fan of any other folk master 'As Luck would have it' is a must have in you... (click to read more)
Could Hendrix have been reincarnated? Miranda Garrod cont...

Could you be listening to a female Jimmy Hendrix? Of course these things are a matter of opinion. Miranda Garrod has a superb guitar led project going on with her song 'like I'm wasted' that is being reviewed here.

The song has bags of energy with dirty and fuzzy guitar riffs being the main focus of the song. The vocals are good as is the song in general although the drumming could be improved greatly as could be the production. This takes nothing away from the songwriting and idea which is solid and could quite easily pick up a significant following. Perhaps if this were released 30 years ago, a song like this would be a sure bet. Todays market may not be a supportive of this kind of sound.  Still, worth a listen and if it's your bag you ca... The Man I Thought I'd Never Have by Miranda Garrod
Posted by mhussey in news category TOTO News on 21/12/2011 at 12:28:51
'The Man I Thought I'd Never Have' by Miranda Garrod is an interesting blend of crunchy guitar chords over a simple string line topped with a haunting vocal. Although the song is not ground breaking musically or lyrically it does have a certain ghostly charm to it which will appeal to some more than others. There's plenty of scope for improved production perhaps with the addition of drums and bass halfway through or the track may work fantastically in some form of remix.  Miranda has a very unique and distinctive sound as can be heard in another track of hers on our soundcloud link.  You can hear Miranda Garrod at any of the following links.   http://www.myspace.com/mirandagarrod

The ONE you must have from APOGEE
Posted by mhussey in news category TOTO News on 02/12/2011 at 13:44:19
Singer songwriters are often looking for easy ways to record themselves directly into their computers rather than through the popular portable multitrack machines of a few years back. APOGEE sent us their 'one' interface for review which allows you very easily plug up and record directly into your computer.
Design, look and build quality
The unit itself is rather smart and somewhat resembles the style of a smart phone but with a central knob thats used for controlling the mic and headphone levels. There is an internal mic (see below) that is situated on the front of the unit under the large knob. On the bottom of the unit you find a headphone socket for monitoring whereas the top of the unit allo... (click to read more)
The Lo Fi Junky from ZVEX
Posted by mhussey in news category TOTO News on 30/11/2011 at 13:50:02
Most guitarists have owned a chorus pedal at some stage in their life and have probably been very happy with it after playing around with its various sounds for a while. For the chorus pedals I have owned and tested I've found only a few sounds I would actually ever use and always wanted something a little more creative to play around with.
One pedal, the Lo Fi Junky from ZVEX could be one such pedal that gives you that extra something. Although, I guess it is not strictly speaking a chorus pedal you can still get the subtle warble and very usable sound or the very spooky high speed / high depth flutter. The actual intention behind the design of the pedal was to recreate the Lo Fi sound of days gone by... (click to read more)
Yamaha NCX900R classical electro acoustic guitar
Posted by mhussey in news category TOTO News on 21/11/2011 at 10:41:41
A good classical or spanish guitar could cost you a fortune and so players that can't afford one of the bigger names often find themselves looking for something affordable and actually playable. Of course you could go for a custom build from a specialist and dedicated guitar maker but you'll find yourself on a considerable waiting list, with a big price tag and there is no guarantee it will be as you envisaged it. For the reason that most performances, unless you are a big named player, require that the guitar has some sort of pickup it is important not only to have a guitar that plays well but one that sounds good when plugged up without too much additional work.

Without mentioning any names oth... (click to read more)
GHS Coated Bass Boomers reviewed
Posted by mhussey in news category TOTO News on 21/11/2011 at 22:30:09
45-105 Medium, Long Scale
Strings are an extremely important factor in your setup, and there are more and more different varieties on the market to choose from. GHS coated Bass Boomers are nickel wound bass guitar strings which are available in various gauges. I'm not a huge fan of coated strings, but i was using GHS strings many years ago and i certainly remember them being the best in their price range, so i thought of giving their new coated version a try. GHS took their Nickel Plated Steel wrap wire and coats it using a strict regulated process, which gives them an extended performance life.

Right away, I remembered why these strings were special. First of all, I love the smooth sound of a nickel plated string. Depending on th... (click to read more)
Gravity from Watford
Posted by mhussey in news category TOTO News on 18/11/2011 at 12:21:00
‘Gravity’ is a Watford based band with a typical pop/indie style. I took a listen to their most listened to track, ‘Starfire’. The beginning to the track introduced a euphoric like melody mimicking what seems similar to Muse ‘Starlight’ playing at a steady pace, easy enough to provide dynamics and impact emotionally. As the beat and vocals hit in, I became aware of the contrast in the almost jazzy sound of the track to the restrained vocals. The guitar solo, displays fast riffs with paced drumming to accompany, this is an example of the band’s diverse musical skills, guaranteeing some form of emotion for the listener.
I also took a listen to ‘Into Blue’ the name says it all really. The bluesy subdued tone makes... (click to read more)
TC release a welcomed surprise for Tone Print users
Posted by mhussey in news category TOTO News on 18/11/2011 at 12:13:48
TC Electronic, a music equipment manufacturer, has developed a game-changing iPhone app for guitarists using its range of TonePrint® guitar effect pedals. TonePrint pedals feature an amazing technology that allows users to upload custom-made sounds created by some of the best guitar players in the world. Until now, users have downloaded these TonePrints from the company’s website and transferred them to their pedals via USB. Now, the new TonePrint App allows guitarists to simply hold the speaker of their iPhone above one of their guitar pickups to load new TonePrints into their pedals.

“Most guitarists have their pedals in a rehearsal space and their computer at home. Some may have brought a laptop, but the process still needed to be made faster and m... (click to read more)
